Choosing the Right Wax for Beginners
When it comes to candle making for beginners, picking the right wax can set you up for success. Soy wax is a popular choice because it's easy to work with, eco-friendly, and offers a clean burn with great scent throw. Golden Brands 464 Soy Wax is a top pick for beginners thanks to its smooth texture, forgiving melt range, and excellent cold and hot throw.
If you prefer another option, other natural blends (like coconut-soy blends) are also beginner-friendly. When comparing waxes, check for qualities like:
- Smooth tops after cooling
- Strong fragrance hold
- Easy release from molds (for wax melts)
Starting with the right wax makes it easier to follow simple candle-making instructions and get consistent, beautiful results from your first pour.
Can I Use Essential Oils in My Candles?
For beginners, we recommend sticking with high-quality fragrance oils. Here’s why:
- Fragrance oils are specially formulated for candles and are more predictable when it comes to scent throw and stability.
- Some essential oils can change scent or performance when exposed to high heat or an open flame.
- Beginner-friendly fragrance oils also make it easier to get the strong, consistent aroma you want in your finished candles.
For your first few projects, fragrance oils will help you achieve the results you’re aiming for. This is why they’re included in most candle making kits for beginners!
