Leaves too much soot
"I'm new at candle making and just learning about wicks. I found these particular wicks are great at releasing the fragrance oil in a container candle when using a large diameter container (at least 3. 75) However, the soot residue is a bit much. My walls have a black residue left from the soot and our air conditioner filter was completely black on both sides after just two weeks of replacing the filter. This was never a problem before I burned candles using this particular wick. Like I said, I'm a newbie at candle making and didn't realize how important wick testing was before I ordered a hundred if these wicks (lesson learned) but I will use the rest to make citronella candles to be burned OUTside. The wax I used may have contributed to the soot build up (I used the paraffin pro container wax) but there was also a problem with mushrooming even though I trimmed the wick regularly. . I will continue experimenting with wicks, but from now on, I will order sample packs until I find the right ones. The Flaming Candle Company is AWESOME and I'm very pleased with their waxes and fragrance oils!"

- I have been making candles for 4 years and always have used a zinc core wick. I am having issues all of a sudden with them turning white and ashy at the zip and self extinguishing themselves. Do you have any suggestions or reasons as to why this is happening? I am using IGI 6006 and the fragrance load has been 8%-9% depending on the fragrance. Thank you for your help and any information could you give me.

Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to pinpoint the exact cause because waxes, wicks, and fragrance oils all vary from batch to batch (even from the exact same manufacturer with no formulation changes). This is why small-batch testing is vital every single time. A self-extinguishing wick often indicates that the wick is too small, and this batch variance can sometimes necessitate a different wick size. You can always test by removing or changing a single component to try to determine the cause and solution, or simply try a different wick type. The Premier 700 series, for example, works very well with IGI 6006.
